During the CGN Championships 2024, chairman Paul Doop presented a Dedication Award to a number of people, for their years of dedication to the organization. Volunteers Betty and Bert Schimmel and Anja Derksen, as well as the American jury members Ron Hardin and Gifford Howarth, received their award in the Indoor Sports Center Eindhoven to loud applause from participants, audience and their fellow employees and jury members.
During the first WGI European Percussion Regional in 2007, we were introduced to Dr. Gifford Howarth. Since then, it has been impossible to imagine the CGN Percussion platform without him. He has done many clinics, from Dokkum to South Limburg for jury members, staff, and participants of all levels. With his input, Indoor Percussion has developed greatly in the Netherlands and also the jury team grew significantly thanks to Gifford.
Ron Hardin was also there during that first Regional and has come back many times since then, making him a regular face of the CGN jury team for Percussion and Winds. Ron has not only judged but has also given a lot of input to our Visual team and that of the WMC.
Anja Derksen started in 2004 as an all-around volunteer and then focused on the Counting Committee. When CGN decided to switch to digital judging with Competition Suite, she, together with her husband Sjaak, became the rock for us and the units. CGN was the first organization outside the USA to start using this system and that brought many challenges, which Anja managed to solve one by one with the American team. To this day, she is responsible for the ins and outs of Competition Suite. And in the meantime, she has also played this role at other organizations, such as SMP and the WMC.
In 1999, Betty and Bert Schimmel started at CGN and since then it has been impossible to imagine life without them. Bert is always a stable factor behind the CGN black curtain and also responsible for the maintenance of the walkie-talkies, where many a wire has been professionally fixed by him with the soldering iron.
And of course, we know Betty as the lady behind the CGN stand, where everyone knows where to find her for a beautiful piece of jewelry, for example. Over the years, she has raised nice amounts of money for CGN. But also for lost and found, all your questions or just a nice chat: you can always rely on Betty.
CGN is proud of these volunteers and jury members who, each in their own way, have made an indispensable contribution to our organization for many years.
